“Sustainable landscape design uses techniques, which sometimes seem outdated in a world, where everything can be seen with a click and imported in a heart beat. The discovery of what the local has to offer and observing, rather than giving things a quick fix, are the new frontier” Katja Perrey – KP Landscapes.
With almost 30 people attending our most recent edition of the RoGBC Green Cafe, we are proud to announce we have broken our Green Cafe attendance record. The presentation held by Katja Perrey, RoGBC member and lecturer for the evening, proved that Romania has both the need and the opportunity to develop a sustainable landscaping sector.
For those interested, but unable to attend, here is a short preview of the atmosphere at the event.

Technical University - Darmstadt's winning entry with Energate windows
I was browsing the EcoSolutions section of CNN’s website when I read a very interesting headline… “Germany nabs second Solar Decathlon win”.
One of our member companies, Energate, has provided passive house quality glazing for the University of Darmstadt’s entry for Team Germany in the U.S. Department of Energy’s “Solar Decathlon” – an international contest highlighting energy efficiency construction integrated with green energy. The company joined the RoGBC last year, participated in our Sustainable Construction Materials training, and is advising on our exemplary building project.

Plans for the RoGBC’s high performance, multi-purpose green building continued as member companies gathered to hear updates and provide input at an information session on Wednesday. Steve Borncamp provided an update for the RoGBC’s project. The aim for the project includes developing an exemplary building that the RoGBC will use as its office, exhibition and training space for green building solutions, a library for sustainable construction, and a reading room and café open to the public. Space will be made available for auxiliary offices and meeting facilities that our members will be able to use according to their needs. An offer of office space for incubating new green tech businesses would be included in the design and strategic plan.
Hannes Guddat of soap architektur GbR, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the many design and technology options available for sustainable buildings and his experience with demonstration projects. He explained their work with the Technical University of Darmstadt award-winning “Solar House” and a “Plus Energy Home” demonstration building whose energy efficiency and green energy production created a net-positive contribution of energy.
Further meetings will be announced on our website, this blog, and in our members’ newsletter. Next steps include solicitations from member companies for project planning guidance and completion of the next version of the project description document.

The annual event „Expopastoralis” will take place between the 11th and the 13th of September, in Rucar, Arges county. This event involves several thousand people, most of them from an area including the attractive tourism destinations Bran, Moeciu, Sirnea, and the city of Campulung Muscel and its neighboring area. The media visibility of the event involves several transmission hours in the local television (Muşcel TV), plus occasional transmissions from other TV stations. The local authorities are interested to be positioned on the touristic map in Romania and could collaborate for future green positioning on their area.
The member company Star Dome is demonstrating its prototype located in the immediate proximity with the stadium where the event takes place, at roughly 50m from the stage, with direct access to the stadium. The prototype will be exhibited throughout the period, with free public access.
Star Dome is offering to the member companies of the Romania Green Building Council the possibility to provide brochures for the event that will be displayed without cost. Companies can also arrange a larger display of banners, products and/services solutions (within the limits of an outdoor area of 500 sqm, and an indoor area of 40 sqm) and should contact Star Dome directly to discuss the arrangement and potential costs.
In addition, the Rucar Star Dome prototype can become a permanent open platform for demonstration and testing of various green solutions and materials, as well as an exhibition place with the occasion of the regional and local events, in particular, the annual „Expopastoralis”.
Please contact Mr. Florin Dobrescu, at +40(0)723 612 174 or florin.dobrescu@rogbc.org to discuss all details. Everyone, of course, is invited to attend the Expo in Rucar!

Local Incentives for Attracting Green Investments
September 2, 2009 at 12:59 pm | In Events, Legislative Outreach | Leave a CommentTags: green investments, incentive, investment, Legislation, Legislative Outreach, strategy
Romania Green Building Council is creating a strategy with local measures that could be implemented by local public authorities for attracting green investments. The initiative consists of:
- realizing a comprehensive study on successful policies implemented by other local public authorities in different parts of the world and comparing/checking with existing national legislation on what could be done in Romania.
- a survey with questionnaires sent to local public authorities, developers and architects meant to identify their feedback on the topic.
- a Green Cafe on the 23rd of September where we will discuss more details, in workgroups with RoGBC members and guests from the local public authorities on specific suggested measures that the RoGBC is planning to promote further.
The results and the main conclusions of the survey will be presented to the local public authorities within the conference “Cities of the Future: Towards Low Carbon Economies”, organized in Brasov by the Association of Romanian Municipalities and the European Commission on October 14.
Please contact Anca Bieru at anca.bieru@RoGBC.org for more details or getting involved.
RoGBC Green Cafe – Urbanization and Adaptive Reuse
August 21, 2009 at 3:00 pm | In Events | Leave a CommentTags: buildings, Energy Efficiency, green cafe, strategy, Sustainable Development
The August edition of the RoGBC Green Cafe ended with unanimous laughter as Jaime Lerner, a Brazilian mayor sang the “Sustainability song” during his presentation on reinventing the urban system in his native city, Curitiba. “The city is not the problem, the city is the solution”, said Lerner in his TED Conference presentation that the Green Cafe participants watched and discussed. A provocative thought that would motivate the discussions around “urbanization and adaptive reuse”, which was the main topic of this month’s meeting.
“Every city in the world can be improved in less than three years” argued Jaime Lerner. “This is not a matter of scale, it is not a question of financial resources” he added, before expressing his strong belief that “every problem in a city has to have its own equation of co-responsibility.” To explain this position, Lerner listed some of the most significant factors in achieving success, by presenting his work for restructuring the city of Curitiba.
While selecting important experience tools from his presentation, the participants described some of the obstacles that Romania crosses whenever it faces a changing agent willing to take action in the urban space. The lack of education, the very high level of beaurocracy and the lack of measures that would be specifically adequate to the Romanian environment were only some of the arguments the participants presented.
The discussion had a solid optimistic foundation that was set by another short movie, called “Adaptive Reuse in the Netherlands”. The educational documentary presenting the successful transformation of the Borneo docks and Sporenburg of Amsterdam into residential neighborhoods set a striking positive example of intelligent adaptation of the city to the needs of its inhabitants. Discussing the possibilities for Romania, the participants agreed that there is a constant need to adapt innovation and creativity to the local environment specificity.
